How to connect ChatGPT or Claude to Vestd
Use the Vestd MCP connection to ask your AI assistant about your shares, options and cap table. Read-only, no API keys needed.
Last updated: 17/08/2026
TL;DR: This guide explains how to connect your AI assistant to Vestd, the UK's FCA regulated share scheme and equity management platform, so you can ask questions about your cap table and share schemes in everyday language and get answers drawn from your live Vestd data. It covers what you'll need, how to set up the connection in ChatGPT and Claude, what you can ask, and the limits you should know about. The connection is read-only, so nothing in your Vestd account can be changed by an AI assistant.
Finding out who holds what, how much of the option pool is left, or what happened to a leaver's options means knowing where to look in Vestd. Connecting your AI assistant lets you ask the question instead. Here's how to set it up, and what the connection can and can't do.

A few terms you'll see
These come up throughout the guide, so we've explained them once here:
- MCP (Model Context Protocol): an open standard that lets AI assistants connect to other services. It's what allows ChatGPT or Claude to read your Vestd data when you ask it to.
- The Vestd connection: the link between your AI assistant and your Vestd account. ChatGPT calls these "apps" or "connectors" and Claude calls them "connectors", but they're the same thing.
- Connection URL: the web address you give your AI assistant so it knows where to find Vestd. Ours is https://app.vestd.com/mcp.
- OAuth: the sign-in method the connection uses. You log in to Vestd as normal and approve the connection, rather than copying an API key between the two tools.
- Hallucination: when an AI assistant states something confidently that isn't true. It's the main reason to check any figure before you act on it.
What the connection can and can't do
The connection is strictly read-only. Your AI assistant can retrieve information from Vestd to answer your questions, but it can't create, update, delete or file anything. Nothing you ask an AI assistant to do will change your Vestd account, your cap table or your HMRC filings.
A few other things to know before you start:
- You'll still be asked to approve access. Your AI tool will usually ask permission before it retrieves data from Vestd, and you can decline.
- You only see what you'd normally see. The connection signs in as you, so it can only reach the companies and records your Vestd account already gives you access to.
- Check the answers. AI assistants can hallucinate. Always verify anything important in Vestd before you act on it.
What you'll need
- Access to a company account on Vestd.
- A ChatGPT or Claude account that supports custom MCP connections. Both tools support this on most paid plans, and Claude also supports it on the free plan. Company-managed accounts may need an administrator to set it up (see the sections below).
- The Vestd connection URL: https://app.vestd.com/mcp
You won't need to generate or manage API keys. The connection uses OAuth, and your AI tool will identify which Vestd features are available to it.
How to connect ChatGPT
ChatGPT's setup varies by plan and OpenAI changes it from time to time. If what you see doesn't match the steps below, check OpenAI's own guide to MCP apps.
On a personal plan:
- Go to Profile > Settings > Connectors.
- Open Advanced settings and toggle Developer mode on, if it isn't already.
- Back on the Connectors page, click Create.
- Enter a name for the connector, such as Vestd.
- Paste the Vestd connection URL into the MCP Server URL field: https://app.vestd.com/mcp
- Choose the OAuth authentication option.
- Tick the "I trust this application" checkbox, then click Create.
- Follow the sign-in prompts to authorise your Vestd account.
To use it in a chat, click + in the message box, then More > Developer mode > Add sources > Vestd. You'll need to do this in every chat where you want ChatGPT to query your Vestd data.
On a company-managed plan: an administrator or workspace owner usually has to add the connection on your behalf, under Workspace settings. Once they've done that, you sign in to authorise your own Vestd account. If you're not sure who your workspace administrator is, your IT team will be able to tell you.
How to connect Claude
- Go to Profile > Settings > Connectors.
- Click Add, then Add custom connector. On some plans this sits behind a "+" button.
- Enter a name for the connector, e.g. Vestd.
- Paste the Vestd connection URL into the Remote MCP server URL field: https://app.vestd.com/mcp
- Click Add, then follow the sign-in prompts to authorise your Vestd account.
To use it in a chat, click the "+" button in the message box and turn the Vestd connector on. You'll need to do this in every chat where you want Claude to query your Vestd data.
On a Team or Enterprise plan: an owner adds the connector under Organisation settings, and everyone else then connects to it from their own Connectors page.
Example prompts to try
Once connected, you can ask questions about the companies you manage on Vestd, such as:
- "Show me our current cap table."
- "Summarise the share schemes for this company."
- "What information is recorded about this shareholder?"
- "Explain our current share structure."
- "Summarise the company's recent share activity."
- "How many options are left in our pool?"
- "Which option holders have left the company?"
You'll get better answers if you name the company you mean, especially if you manage more than one on Vestd.
FAQs
Can an AI assistant change anything in my Vestd account?
No. The connection is read-only. Your assistant can retrieve information to answer questions, but it can't create, update, delete or file anything on Vestd.
Do I need an API key?
No. The connection uses OAuth, so you sign in to Vestd as normal and approve the connection. There's nothing to generate, copy or store.
What can the connection see?
Only what your own Vestd account can see. It signs in as you, so it's limited to the cap table, share schemes and shareholder records you already have access to.
Which AI tools does this work with?
ChatGPT and Claude, on accounts that support custom MCP connections. Other assistants that support MCP may also work, but these are the two we've tested.
My company manages our AI accounts centrally. Can I still use this?
Usually, but an administrator may need to add the connection for the whole workspace first. Once they have, you sign in to authorise your own Vestd account.
Can I trust the answers?
Treat the answers as a starting point and verify them. AI assistants can hallucinate, so check anything you're relying on in Vestd before you act on it.
How do I disconnect?
Remove the Vestd connection from the Connectors or Apps section of your AI tool's settings.
